This is a sci fi gun I started as part of a ZBrush workshop with the CGSociety. A basic Hi poly was made in 3ds Max, this was then imported into Zbrush where I added all the details. The Art Deco elements were created using a number of displacement maps which were then adjusted and baked onto the hi poly in ZBrush. Damage and wear was then added with a variety of brushes. The individual elements were exported out ready for baking once the low poly was made in 3ds Max. These were all baked using cages in XNormal, which gave me Normal, AO and cavity maps.
Using the Ambient Occlusion as a base, I textured the gun in Photoshop. There were very little photos used for this as It was mostly done by hand in Photoshop.
I brought in the Art Deco elements as I am a huge fan of the style and wanted to do more then just a generic futuristic style. I was inspired by patterns from a number of Art Deco sources, including Elevator doors, trims around entrance ways and murals.
This is a render from ZBrush showing the Hi Poly model just before i started exporting it all out for XNormal.
